Bulgaria – 75th in the world in freedom of media

The new report of the “Freedom house” organization informs on a common tendency towards restriction of the freedom in the media in 195 countries. Bulgaria remains in the group of the states with “partially free media”.

This announced radio “Deutsche Welle”.

The annual report of “Freedom house” for the freedom of media was presented in Washington by the director of the organization Jennifer Windsor in the eve of the world day for freedom of media 3 May. The documents notes a common trend towards loss of the freedom of media in the conditions of all political regimes: “The freedom of media decreases for already seven successive years and this refers to all world regions”.

The most worrying is the situation in Eastern and Central Europe. According to the report this is due to the committed physical attacks, murders and persecutions of journalists in Bulgaria, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Bulgaria is on 76th place in freedom of the media.

This is how the chief researcher of the report dr. Karen Karlekar comments the data for Bulgaria: “In Bulgaria the main reason for worsening of the media climate is the continuing non-punishment of former crimes against journalists as well as the increasing of the number of attacks against representatives of the media. They include different forms of persecution, death threats: one journalist was beaten in a very brutal way, another was killed. An utterly worrying trend is being observed in Bulgaria”.
